Erosion Control

It takes over 500 years to form one inch of topsoil.

Soil is a precious resource that is non-renewable in our lifetime and that affects ecosystems globally and a number of human industries, from agriculture to horticulture to engineering.

As ecological landscapers, we consider soil health, texture, structure, and potential to erode, in every step of the design and implementation process. Erosion can be affected by several factors including: topography (steep slopes), poor stormwater management, stream diversion, and flooding.

Designed plantings can offer dramatic erosion protection, but only if the soil is hospitable for growing. Soil remediation steps may be necessary, as determined by soil chemistry tests.

Green Jay Landscape Design’s methods of ecological erosion control include:

  • Adding Jutte netting, straw blankets, filtrexx socks, and/or geotextile fabric along steep slopes, to aid in securing planting
  • Constructing garden terraces and/or walkways with water bars
  • Using structural soil (with a higher mineral or clay content), which breaks down slowly, preserving the integrity of the slope.
  • Planting low-growing, spreading plants as ground cover (green mulch)
  • Redirecting stormwater through effective management
