From Soggy Yards to Resilient Landscapes: Solutions That Work

Stormwater challenges aren’t solved with a single pipe or drain. They’re solved by layered systems that infiltrate, absorb, redirect, and store water intelligently, all while enhancing the beauty and health of your property.

Here are the site-specific tools we use to manage runoff, reduce erosion, and protect your investment:

  • Clean Gutters – Simple but essential, this first step prevents cascading issues.
  • Foundation Protection – With gravel beds and rubber liners, we keep water out of your basement and off your foundation.
  • Downspout Diversion – Solid pipe pitched 10’ from the house sends water where it can safely infiltrate.
  • Bioswales – Natural channels filled with gravel and vegetation that filter and slow down runoff.
  • Wagon Wheel Systems – Perforated pipes embedded in gravel basins that slowly return water to the subsoil.
  • Vertical Infiltrators – Compact systems that allow rainwater to move deep into the ground without spreading across the lawn.
  • Sub-Grade Storage (Cultecs) – Hidden underground chambers that store large amounts of water and release it safely.
  • Rain Gardens – Planted basins that absorb water, reduce flooding, and support local biodiversity.
  • Vegetated Buffers – Plantings that protect nearby wetlands and naturally filter runoff.
  • Soil Amendments – Biochar, compost, and green sand improve drainage while enriching your soil’s biology.
  • Passive Irrigation Systems – Rain barrels and perforated pipe setups that redirect water for reuse in your garden.
  • Grading and Contouring – Re-shaping land to guide water naturally and reduce destructive flow.

Stormwater, Slopes & Erosion FAQs

What is stormwater management?

Stormwater management improves water quality by reducing runoff of rainwater from roofs, patios, driveways, and roads into waterways like streams, lakes, and oceans. Instead, stormwater is filtered and absorbed into the soil, replenishing aquifers and avoiding contamination of fresh water bodies. Stormwater management is a blanket term that includes many strategies including: rain gardens, bioswales, reducing impermeable space, passive irrigation, rain water harvesting, permeable hardscapes, and more. For more information, visit our Stormwater Management page.

What is a rain garden?

A rain garden is designed to temporarily hold rainwater runoff from impermeable surfaces such as roads, driveways, roofs, or lawns during and after a rainfall. These gardens consist of a mixture of native plants in a natural downward slope or depression and drain within one to three days of the rainfall. They are much more effective in filtering water into the soil and removing pollutants and chemicals in the runoff than a conventional lawn. The US EPA estimates that pollutants carried by rainwater runoff account for 70% of all water pollution.

How do you landscape a steep slope?

There are many tools for landscaping steep slopes. Depending on the severity of the slope, we may use boulders and compostable socks to construct terraces. Terraces create room for planting, and form undulations in the slope that slow the flow of runoff, reducing erosion in the process. We might also rebuild a slope with mineral soil to hold the structure and integrity of the slope. At planting time, we often plant directly into jute netting, which acts as a soil stabilizer while the plant roots become established and secure the slope further.

How do I know if I have a landscape drainage issue?

Excess water may often appear in areas that are not draining properly. Inspect your property and check for:

  • standing water or pooling after rainfall
  • pooling water from downspouts
  • soggy ground
  • soil scouring or erosion
  • water in basement
  • sump pumps running often or always

There can be various causes for drainage issues. For solutions, see our Stormwater Management page.
